About Our Residency Program

OBGYN & RS School of Medicine

The UC San Diego Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences offers a 4-year Categorical Residency for clinical postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. We boast a large group of accomplished clinical and research faculty that represent the breadth and depth of our specialty. Our faculty physician leaders are current and previous Deans, Chief Medical Officers, Society Presidents and founding authors and editors of our specialty’s foundational textbooks.

We are consistently nationally ranked among the top OBGYN programs for NIH funding. Home to networks and well-funded independent investigators. Recently we have been ranked between 3rd–5th in NIH funding and our Department is 3rd of all UC San Diego departments in research funding per faculty.

Partnerships that work!

For over 30 years, UC San Diego and Kaiser worked together to train residents. It is a fantastic blend that affords residents the opportunity to train in two educational models. UC San Diego offers an academic model and Kaiser an apprenticeship model both with excellent physician-educators. Did you know Ken Ryan was the first Chair of our Department? As one of the first Ryan Residency Training Programs, UC San Diego has partnered with Planned Parenthood for over 3 decades as well. Our predecessors got it right!  The relationships between UC San Diego, Kaiser Permanente and Planned Parenthood provide amazing educational opportunities for our residents.

Our locations:

  • UC San Diego Health System
    • Hillcrest Medical Center (Once the county hospital, the Hillcrest Hospital has long been a regional safety net.  The south campus is also home to our resident clinic, Medical Offices South)
    • Jacobs Medical Center
    • Rebecca and John Moores NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
    • Rady Children’s Hospital
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Planned Parenthood

Our residents work along-side fellows on several rotations. Learn more about our fellowships.
